Can an Apprentice Apply for a NSW Electrical Contractor Licence?

·8 min read

No. A current apprentice or trainee cannot apply for a NSW electrical licence or certificate. You must apply as soon as your apprenticeship or traineeship finishes to keep doing electrical work; Service NSW’s application guidance for Building Commission NSW was updated 6 July 2026, with figures checked 1 October 2026.

What must I do when my apprenticeship or traineeship ends?

Apply as soon as your training finishes if you want to keep doing electrical work. Applying is not the same as being licensed: Service NSW says not to start work until you have an approved licence or certificate.

Building Commission NSW will assess the application. The licence-or-certificate requirement applies to electrical wiring work across residential, commercial and industrial work in NSW, regardless of the cost.

Can I use the online application?

You must be an individual with the approved qualifications and experience. Companies, partnerships and contractors in another trade cannot use this online tool.

You also need a MyServiceNSW Account. Once logged in, Service NSW says you can stop at any time and return to the saved form. By logging in, you consent to your name and email address in the account being shared with Building Commission NSW, a division of the Department of Customer Service.

The online tool helps you check the qualifications, experience and supporting documents relevant to your application.

What if I already hold an interstate electrical licence?

You may be able to use an interstate licence to work in NSW under the Automatic Mutual Recognition (AMR) scheme. If you are eligible, you must notify the licence regulator of your intention to work in NSW.

This is general information, not financial or legal advice. Check the current Service NSW or Building Commission NSW regulator page before applying, and read the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) for any insurance policy you are considering.
