NT Electrical Contractor AMR: Must Interstate Electricians Lodge a $0 Notification?

·8 min read

Yes—but only an eligible individual, including a sole trader, who holds a current electrical contractor licence issued outside the Northern Territory can use the NT AMR route; companies and partnerships cannot. Under NT Government’s NT WorkSafe guidance, updated 13 May 2025, an eligible applicant intending to work in the NT must lodge an AMR notification, the notification has a $0 fee, and the scheme commenced in the NT on 1 July 2022. Figures checked 1 October 2026.

Who qualifies for NT electrical contractor AMR?

The applicant must be an eligible individual seeking to use a current out-of-state electrical contractor licence for the same activities in the NT. A sole trader can qualify, but the applicant cannot be using AMR on behalf of a company or partnership.

The NT Government says a person with a current licence or registration from another state or territory may be able to work in the NT under AMR. That wording does not create an unconditional right to work: the person must be eligible and the proposed work must fall within the same activities covered by the current authority.

What does the $0 notification involve?

The route is a notification process rather than an application for a new NT licence or registration.

An eligible applicant must:

  1. Use the Automatic mutual recognition notification – electrical form.
  2. Lodge the notification with NT WorkSafe.
  3. Notify NT WorkSafe of the intention to work in the NT.
  4. Pay no fee for that notification.

The NT Government expressly states that the notification has a $0 fee and that the applicant does not have to apply for an NT licence or registration through this AMR notification route.

Can a company or partnership use the same route?

No. The AMR scheme does not extend to companies or partnerships, even though the NT Government says an electrical contractor licence may be issued to a partnership or body corporate.

Those structures cannot rely on an individual’s AMR notification. For an NT electrical contractor licence application, applicants must use the form relevant to their structure; NT WorkSafe lists separate forms for a company or partnership and for a sole trader.

What if my primary place of residence is in the NT?

An individual whose primary place of residence is in the NT cannot use AMR. They must apply for an NT licence or registration under the mutual recognition process instead.

Applicants using that process still need to demonstrate that they remain competent in electrical work. Primary residence is the relevant test identified by the NT Government—not simply whether the interstate licence or the proposed NT project is held or performed elsewhere.

Does the $0 notification settle the insurance question?

No. The $0 statement concerns the AMR notification fee only. It does not say that every insurance requirement or policy condition is waived.

Separately, the NT Government states that an applicant for an electrical contractor licence must hold at least $5,000,000 of public and products liability insurance for personal injury or property damage arising from electrical work performed under the licence. That licensing requirement should not be confused with the fee for an AMR notification.

This is general information, not financial or legal advice. Check the current regulator page before relying on AMR, and check the product disclosure statement for your insurance policy to understand the cover, exclusions and conditions that apply to you.

FAQ

Must every interstate electrician lodge a $0 notification?

No. Only an eligible individual intending to work in the NT under AMR must lodge the notification. Companies, partnerships and people whose primary residence is in the NT cannot use this route.

Which form must an eligible applicant use?

Use the Automatic mutual recognition notification – electrical form to notify NT WorkSafe of the intention to work in the NT.

Can a company or partnership rely on a director’s or partner’s current licence?

No. The NT Government says the AMR scheme does not apply to companies or partnerships, regardless of which individual holds the current out-of-state authority.

What must an NT resident do instead?

A person whose primary place of residence is in the NT must apply for an NT licence or registration under the mutual recognition process and demonstrate continued competence in electrical work.

Does the $0 notification fee mean there is no insurance cost?

No. The NT Government confirms only that the AMR notification has no fee. It separately publishes insurance requirements for an electrical contractor licence application, and the applicable insurance policy’s PDS remains the controlling source for its cover and conditions.
