Consumer Affairs Tasmania’s Electrical licence – contractor | Consumer Affairs page, updated 17 July 2026, lists four electrical licence types—practitioner, contractor, restricted and provisional—and says an electrical contractor licence is required when entering into contracts to perform electrical work; figures checked 1 October 2026. A contractor can contract only for electrical work within the scope permitted under its nominated manager’s practitioner licence. The same page requires at least $5 million in public and products liability insurance for a contractor licence application and says applications will be processed within 21 days after all required information is received.
If you work for a company holding the appropriate contractor licence, you do not need your own contractor licence merely because you work for that company, provided you are not responsible for entering into the electrical-work contract.
What do the practitioner and contractor licences do?
The distinction is about the role each licence performs in a contracting arrangement:
| Issue | Electrical contractor licence | Nominated manager’s practitioner licence |
|---|---|---|
| Main role | Entering into contracts to perform electrical work | Supporting the contractor as its nominated manager |
| Who must hold it | The individual or entity entering into the electrical-work contract | The contractor’s nominated manager |
| Scope | Covers electrical work the contractor may offer and contract for | Defines the scope within which the contractor may contract |
| Key limit | Cannot extend beyond the nominated manager’s practitioner-licence scope | Acts as the ceiling for the contractor’s work |
The nominated manager must be suitably competent, hold an electrical practitioner licence in Tasmania and complete the required course under Determination 2016 - Approved courses electricity, gas, plumbing.
The regulator also lists restricted and provisional licences as separate types. Their detailed eligibility and scope are not part of this contractor-licence comparison.
Does an employee need their own contractor licence?
No—not merely because the person works for a company that holds the appropriate electrical contractor licence. The key distinction is whether the employee is entering into the contract for electrical work.
| Situation | Need for a separate contractor licence |
|---|---|
| Employed by an appropriately licensed company and not responsible for entering its electrical-work contracts | No, not merely because of that employment |
| Personally entering into contracts to perform electrical work for clients or another business | The contractor-licence requirement applies |
This distinction does not remove the need to comply with Tasmanian requirements when performing electrical work in Tasmania.
Who regulates electrical contracting in Tasmania?
The regulatory names changed on 1 October 2026, when CBOS transitioned to Consumer Affairs Tasmania and Building Standards Tasmania. References to CBOS in older information should be read as referring to the relevant regulatory function within the new agencies.
Because the information is still being updated across the new agencies, check the current regulator page before relying on an old CBOS reference or submitting an application.
Who can apply for a contractor licence?
Either an individual or an entity, such as a company, can apply for an electrical contractor licence.
The applicant must meet the eligibility requirements in the Occupational Licensing - Electrical Work Licence Classes Determination. A company also needs to provide evidence of its registration.
These arrangements are separate from automatic recognition of an interstate licence. An entity cannot rely on the automatic-recognition eligibility described below because that eligibility applies only to contractor licences held by individuals.
What does the contractor licence application require?
The current contractor licensing requirements include the following:
| Requirement | What the applicant must provide or meet |
|---|---|
| Public and products liability insurance | At least $5 million in cover, plus a certificate of currency |
| Entity registration | Evidence of registration when the applicant is an entity |
| Nominated manager | A suitably competent person who holds an electrical practitioner licence in Tasmania |
| Required training | Completion of the course specified in Determination 2016 - Approved courses electricity, gas, plumbing |
| Eligibility | Meeting the requirements in the Occupational Licensing - Electrical Work Licence Classes Determination |
The $5 million figure is a licensing requirement. It is not an insurance premium and does not, by itself, establish whether a particular policy or cover is suitable for the work.
How is a contractor licence applied for?
The application process includes these steps:
- Read the licence-page information so you know what documents are required.
- Read the Personal Information Protection Statement.
- Start the application through the My Licence portal.
- For a new application, provide evidence of the nominated manager’s identity.
- Upload digital copies of the required insurance, applicable entity registration and the nominated manager’s electrical practitioner licence details.
- Answer the licence declaration questions.
- Have a credit card available to pay the licence fee online or at a Service Tasmania shop.
Once all required information has been received, applications will be processed within 21 days. The cited regulator material does not state the licence fee amount, so check the current page before applying.
What declarations must the applicant answer?
The declarations examine both the business history and the personal licensing history of the person answering:
| Whose history is examined | Period covered | Main questions |
|---|---|---|
| Company or business, its owners or directors | Last 10 years | Convictions for dishonesty or prescribed-work offences; civil actions or judgments; licensing history; licence conditions; bankruptcy, creditor arrangements or assignment of property; insolvency or receivership |
| Person answering the application | Ever | Whether they have been disqualified from holding, or refused an application for, a trades contractor registration or licence, or whether one has been cancelled or suspended, including interstate licences, certificates or registrations |
If an infringement notice relating to prescribed work was issued to the company or business, an owner or a director, the regulator directs the applicant to answer yes to the relevant declaration question.
Answering yes to any declaration question requires details and copies of all relevant supporting documentation.
Can an interstate contractor licence be recognised in Tasmania?
An individual who holds an electrical contractor licence in another Australian State or Territory may be eligible for automatic recognition in Tasmania.
That eligibility does not apply to contractor licences held by entities. A company should not assume that an interstate entity licence can be recognised automatically under this process; it must check the current requirements with the regulator.
What should you check before relying on a licence?
Check the current Consumer Affairs Tasmania contractor page for:
- The correct licence type for your role.
- Whether the company holds the appropriate contractor licence.
- The scope allowed under the nominated manager’s practitioner licence.
- Current application, insurance and declaration requirements.
Also check the product disclosure statement for any insurance policy before relying on it. Meeting the licensing insurance threshold does not replace an assessment of the policy’s scope, exclusions and terms.
This article is general information, not financial or legal advice. Licensing and insurance requirements can change, and the regulator’s current page and your policy’s PDS should guide your decision.
